Second Star (A Neverland Transmissions Novel Book 1) By: J.M. Sullivan

About Book:

Wendy Darling worked her entire life to rise through the ranks of the prestigious Londonierre Brigade. Now as a Captain, she has everything she’s always wanted, including a ship and crew of her own. But when the Brigade receives a strange transmission from the legendary James Hooke, lost a hundred years earlier in uncharted space and presumed dead, Wendy is willing to risk it all to rescue her hero. She races to the planet known only as Neverland; her mission to find the long-lost crew and bring them home.

But there is more to Neverland than meets the eye, and more to Hooke than what was written in history books. When Wendy crash lands on the ominous planet, she quickly discovers Neverland’s dark secret; a malevolent being known as The Shadow that’s looking for a host body to escape its eternal prison. To fulfill her mission, Wendy must decide whether to trust the dashing Hooke or the mysterious Fleet mechanic who goes by the name of Pan–and she has to decide quickly…

Before the darkness consumes them all.

My Review:

Loved this sci-fi take on Peter Pan and Neverland. It was great to see Wendy shine as a strong, female leader. I really enjoyed reading this, I haven’t read many sci-fi books, but I have to say that I am trying to read different types of novels and not stick to mystery or crime. I will be on the lookout for the second book to this. I feel the author did a great job in writing this. I am giving this; 5 stars.

My Review:

Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and the author, Barbara Copperthwaitefor my free ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This is a tricky one to review as I don’t want to give anything away as the book is full of twists and turns.     This is a great book and it was my first book by Copperthwaite, but several reviewers who’ve read her other work say that readers should always expect twists and secrets and lies. And boy, were they right!!!

I was hooked from the beginning and could wait to see what was going to happen.  There were times that I was reading this before I went to bed and I kept telling myself you must go to sleep you have work in the morning, but I just kept reading.

I will be looking for more from this author.

Happy Reading every one

My Review

At first I was not getting into this book but after read a few more chapters; I found this to be great novel which kept me up all night reading. I was drawn in by the opening chapters in Albania, which set the story up so that I got to know Odeta and understand her situation.  At times I found Odeta a little innocent and gullible and fell for everything.  The story’s told in two viewpoints – I especially liked Odeta’s but it was good to have the counterbalance of ordinary suburban life going on next door and it keeps you wondering how these two worlds might be brought together.  I found that it ended well and I was hoping for more. This is the first time of reading anything by this author and I will certainly be looking out for more books from her.  Thanks to the Fiction Café Review Group for an ARC copy of this book.

My Review

I don’t usually read poetry, but thought I would give this book a try.  This collection is divided into five chapters depending on the topic. There’s love, relationships, racism, grief, refugees, empowering women etc. and my personal favorite is about self-love. It’s straightforward and successfully stirred my emotions.   It was a short read and I will look into reading her other book in the near future.

My Review

Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and Lisa Scottoline for an ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Oh my gosh I loved this book!!

Noah and Maggie have a quaint marriage, raising Noah’s son Caleb. Sadly, Maggie has a gaping hole in her heart where her own daughter Anna once was. Sometime ago, Maggie’s ex-husband took Anna as an infant and she hasn’t seen or heard from her dear daughter since…until now.

From out of the blue, Maggie receives a phone call from Anna and she’s on cloud nine! Before long the two are meeting for a reunion lunch. And within no time at all, Anna is moving in. But it quickly appears that dear Anna may have her own reasons for wanting to reach out to her mother. And maybe this new family isn’t all she wanted after all.

The answer to everything that went wrong in their lives was…After Anna.

Told in two timelines. Before-Maggie’s POV, and After-Noah’s POV. The story-lines glides back and forth effortlessly. I never had a bit of difficulty following along.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Lisa Scottoline, having read nearly every book she’s released. And this is definitely one of my favorites! If you’re a fan of hers this is a must read! And if you’ve never read one of her books, don’t put it off! This would be a great one to start with!

Auggie & Me: Three Wonder Stories(Wonder #1.5, 1.6, 1.7) By: R.J. Palacio (Reviewed by Rochelle)

About Book

WONDER tells the story of Auggie Pullman: an ordinary boy with an extraordinary face, whose first year at school changed the lives and the perspectives of everyone around him.

AUGGIE & ME is a new side to the WONDER story: three new chapters from three different characters – bully Julian, oldest friend Christopher and classmate Charlotte – giving an insight into how Auggie has touched their own lives. Thought-provoking, surprising, infuriating, heartbreaking and heartwarming, AUGGIE & ME is a must-read for the thousands of readers who loved WONDER.

About Author

R.J. Palacio lives in NYC with her husband, two sons, and two dogs. For more than twenty years, she was an art director and graphic designer, designing book jackets for other people while waiting for the perfect time in her life to start writing her own novel. But one day several years ago, a chance encounter with an extraordinary child in front of an ice cream store made R. J. realize that the perfect time to write that novel had finally come. Wonder is her first novel. She did not design the cover, but she sure does love it.

My Review

Whilst this book didn’t quite reach the levels of Wonder for me, it was a delightful and powerful read nonetheless.   This is a companion book (consisted of 3 stories) from Wonder – and it’s still totally inspiring, beautiful and mesmerizing. We have a chance to see the different point of views from 3 people whose lives intersected with Auggie. There’s Julian, the bully, Christopher, the old friend, and Charlotte, the goody two shoes.

It is, once again, very emotional, so powerful, it gives us the reminder to choose kindness, and that’s what it was all about, the influence of Choose Kind movement.  If you haven’t read Wonder, don’t read this first.  I recommend this book to all.  You never know what one might be facing in his / her life.
