The Longest Farewell Blog Tour

When Nula’s husband James, a British documentary filmmaker, becomes forgetful they put it down to the stress of his work. But his behavior becomes more erratic and inexplicable, and he is eventually diagnosed as suffering from Picks Disease, an early onset and aggressive form of dementia. Suddenly their lives change from comfortable middle-class creatives through inexplicable behaviour, the shock of diagnosis, coping with the ongoing illness, not coping with the illness, to the indignities of care home life. <br<br> The Longest Farewell is a moving description of James utter mental and physical deterioration, and the effect that it had both on him and on the people from whom he was involuntarily retreating, particularly Nula. Her life is completely taken over by James illness: her frustration at trying to cope, her guilt at having to hand over his care to professionals in England, are just part of her at times harrowing story.

With James in care and left with seemingly little to do but wait for his death, Nula meets Bonnie, another resident at the care home suffering from the same condition. In turn she meets Bonnie’s husband, the broadcaster John Suchet and the similarity of their positions becomes a bond between them. After the deaths of James and Bonnie, and some guilt-induced false starts, Nula’s story takes a bitter-sweet turn: they become partners, and eventually marry. The Longest Farewell is a heartfelt yet inspiring account of dealing with dementia, and of unexpectedly finding a happy ending.

Now retired, she lives in London with her husband, the broadcaster John Suchet, who she met in the care home where their spouses were being cared for with dementia. Her book, The Longest Farewell, on dealing with her husband’s dementia and the heartbreak that came with it is available now.

My Review:

This is my second time of reading a book that dealt with this disease.  It is sad to read and learn that there really isn’t much a love one can do except just to be there for their loved one.  I am not sure how I would handle this, or even if I could do all that she did for her husband before she had to get outside help.

There were times that this book had me in tears.  I am glad that Nula met another person going through the same as her and that they became friends and eventually finding happiness again in her life.  This was a great book.  Thank you to Kelly at Love Books Tours https://lovebooksgroup.com for the opportunity to take part in this blog tour, for the promotional material and a free copy of the book. This is my honest review.

My Review

If you are after a quick and short story book then check out The Fathers, The Sons, and the Anxious Ghost.  It has just the right blend of plotline and drama to make it a great book.  It touches on themes of friendships, forgiveness and mental health.  This book is a lovely little short story and it is told from the perspective of six connected men.

It was a very interesting and kept my interest throughout the book.

My Thoughts:

Wow Wow and wow, I am loving this series and her books.

Another Willow Rose thriller in the Eva Rae Thomas series. Eva Rae is now ex FBI. Her brother, who she did not know she had, was shot while holding an assault rifle in the school cafeteria. Her father says Adam would never shoot anyone. A number of missing and dead as Eve fights against local law enforcement. The local police do not see the total picture. This is a thriller and a page turner.

I am really loving this series, but I only have one left to read.  But thank goodness she has others.  So On to the last of this series Let Me Go.

Thanks for stopping by and happy reading everyone!!

Until next time

51coYyBn6xL._SY346_I am currently 50% through The Bond Woman. By: Janice Dembosky It’s good so far! The quality of prose is stunning and I am quite enjoying the premise as it unfurls. Growing Up in Pennsylvania makes this book more interesting. A little about the book.  When, at age fifteen, Hannah Miller goes to work “on the Outside” of her Old Order Amish community in Pennsylvania, she promises her parents that she will not be tempted by the fancy lifestyle of “der Englischer.” Two years later, she has kept that promise, but she is now admitting to herself that it is not the English lifestyle that draws her. It is her love for her employer, Abram Goodman.

My Review

This is the first book that I have read by this author and its #5 in the series, but I found it easy to read as a stand-alone, although you do miss out a little on the back story; but I didn’t have a problem catching up with getting to know the characters, I felt it was easy to catch up, I will be looking into ready the first one at least.  There are several main characters in this book, I loved how they were all used in this book.

Set in Birmingham.

Kat is the creator of Starshine Vodka and is in a business partnership with Marty, a shrewd businessman.

Erik is Kat’s brother and is researching a cancer cure, he is also in a business partnership with Marty.

Ben, who had shot and killed his gangster father, who had been planning on killing Kat, is in love with Amy, Eric’s girlfriend. Ben’s brother, Jon, wants revenge for his father’s death, but he’s in prison….!

The story is a family drama, with plenty of action. There’s family betrayals, lies, love, politics and corporate dealings all set against the background of Vodka production. A fast paced, twisty, gripping and thoroughly entertaining read.  And who doesn’t have family drama in their family.  I can honestly say there is some in my family.

I loved the authors’ style of writing, and I will be looking for more from this author.

It’s Monday

I hope that everyone had a great weekend and had time to read.

Its Monday what are you reading? A place to meet up and show what you have been reading over the week.

It’s an opportunity to visit and comment and er… add to your groaning TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn here at The Book Date.  So I thought I would try it and see if I could keep up with it and share what I am reading and planning on reading.

What I read last week:

Waves-Break-on-Unknown-Shores-original5

Past events cast shadows you can’t outrun. Wayne and Phil knew that better than anyone, after Stevie died, way back when they were children. A pebble dropped in a pool. Ripples spreading outwards. Who knew where they would end?

No one wants to think about getting older. It’s true. At any age, when things are moving along normally day to day and everyone seems fit and well, there seems no reason to think about future problems that your friends and relatives might (and probably will) come across as they age. In fact, it might even seem a little morbid to think such thoughts, or possibly even tempting fate?

Yet there will come a time when you must raise these issues and, ideally, this should be before any problems arise. The Essential Family Guide to Caring for Older People is the ultimate source of information and help for families with care responsibilities. Deborah Stone draws on her extensive experience working in elder care to offer practical advice on every aspect of the field in-depth.

The Bond Woman is not the typical “Amish novel,” in that it does not present the Amish in a pristine, idyllic lifestyle where the greatest transgressions might be coveting a piece of lace or loving music from “the Outside.” Nor is this is this a predictable love story; rather, it is a complex psychological drama that deals with Hannah’s dual conversion — both inward and outward. Like an irresistible light, the story line of The Bond Woman draws Hannah and the reader in unpredictable directions.

At the same time, a serial killer is planning one of the most horrific mass killings in history.

Will Eva Rae find it in her heart to help her father after what he did to her? Will facing him again set her free or pull her under?

SAY YOU LOVE ME is the fourth book in the Eva Rae Thomas Mystery Series and can be read as a standalone.

Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) By: Barry Litherland

Past events cast shadows you can’t outrun. Wayne and Phil knew that better than anyone, after Stevie died, way back when they were children. A pebble dropped in a pool. Ripples spreading outwards. Who knew where they would end?

Holiday May Grimsby, D and G etc (121) Barry Litherland

is an author living and working in the far north of Scotland, not far from John O’Groats. He writes in a variety of genres but has achieved greatest success with his recent crime and paranormal crime thrillers, Waves Break on Unknown Shores, The Hand of Ronan Hawke and Turbulence. He is an avid reader and loves classical novels, modern literary fiction and self-published books. When he’s not writing or reading, he likes photography, at an amateur level, cycling, and walking the mountains and coastlines of the Northern Highlands. After a successful and rewarding career in primary education, he now considers writing his new vocation and writes a new book each year. He has two new novels awaiting proofreading prior to publication and – a new venture – two Middle-Grade children’s novels (for 8-12-year-olds.)

He is married to Susie, has three children, a grandson, Harry, and two springer spaniels, Ziggy and Daisy.

My Review:

I would like to thank https://lovebooksgroup.com/ and the publisher for an ARC copy of this book

This is the first book that I have read by this author, and I am sure that it won’t be my last.

Phil and Wayne share a bond of friendship that was forged through the loss of a mutual childhood friend. Twenty years have passed, and Wayne’s troubled brother Tyrone returns, stirring up memories from the past and exposing them to danger. In this fast-paced thriller, Litherland combines well-fleshed out characters with page-turning suspense that keeps readers engaged until the very end.

Paced perfectly, both in terms of mystery and writing, with just enough tension building to keep the reader turning to the next chapter, wanting to know more. A well-constructed mystery and well-written.
