Dear Martin:  By Nic Stone

41Vlmdu+0aL._SX329_BO1,204,203,200_Raw, captivating, and undeniably real, Nic Stone joins industry giants Jason Reynolds and Walter Dean Myers as she boldly tackles American race relations in this stunning New York Times bestselling debut, a William C. Morris Award Finalist.
Justyce McAllister is a good kid, an honor student, and always there to help a friend—but none of that matters to the police officer who just put him in handcuffs. Despite leaving his rough neighborhood behind, he can’t escape the scorn of his former peers or the ridicule of his new classmates.

Justyce looks to the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for answers. But do they hold up anymore? He starts a journal to Dr. King to find out.

Then comes the day Justyce goes driving with his best friend, Manny, windows rolled down, music turned up—way up, sparking the fury of a white off-duty cop beside them. Words fly. Shots are fired. Justyce and Manny are caught in the crosshairs. In the media fallout, it’s Justyce who is under attack.

Nic Stone was born and raised in a suburb of Atlanta, GA, and the only thing she loves more than an adventure is a good story about one. After graduating from Spelman College, she worked extensively in teen mentoring and lived in Israel for a few years before returning to the US to write full-time. Growing up with a wide range of cultures, religions, and backgrounds, Stone strives to bring these diverse voices and stories to her work.

You can find her goofing off and/or fangirling over her adorable little family on most social media platforms as @getnicced, or on her website:

My Thoughts:

Dear Martin follows Justyce who is a black teen boy who goes on a journey of discovering the hardships of being a black male.

This book plot is ripped from the headlines where two young black males were shot and one killed at a gas station by a white male because their music was too loud. I thought I was going to like this book as much as I enjoyed The Hate You Give, but this fell a little flat. I wanted more character development and more to the plot. I knew the outcome of the story because I knew the outcome of the actual event this story was loosely based.

I must say I am impressed with the many topics this book covers from racial profiling, affirmative action, going along with racist jokes and more. Dear Martin would be a perfect book for a high school class because of the topics it discusses, the engaging story and the short length.

I liked this story but I am not sure about why all the 5 stars, it fell short for me.  I found the author writing style different than I am used to read, maybe it’s because I read to many crime novels.  I am giving this 4 stars.

New Author Review

While searching for a book, I came across a post from one the Facebook Book groups I belong to and seen an author mentioning her book.  So I asked her want was the name of her book, I first downloaded a sample of it and liked it so I then purchased it.  I loved it.  So now your wondering what is the name of this new author and name of the book.

So with out further ado!

Growing Only Dandelions by:  Joan Hugues

41wNoTtwmlLGrowing Only Dandelions” is an inspirational story of a woman who has a near-death experience that propels her on a spiritual and emotional journey. This unconventional supernatural manuscript dares the reader to consider the possibility of a present and loving God through a narrative that triggers one’s imagination to question every action and inaction.Bethany, a wife and mother, is enjoying a beautiful day at the beach with her family. She falls asleep while her husband and son swim in the ocean. Awakened by the winds of an approaching storm, Bethany is alarmed by how dangerous the water has turned. She frantically searches for her family before rushing to the water and jumping into it. Bethany struggles against the treacherous waters and slams her head against a reef on the ocean’s floor. Falling unconscious, Bethany says “I never saw a more brilliant light.”Bethany opens her eyes in heaven and her spiritual and emotional journey begins. She is escorted through a long corridor by a man insisting that she must see “Him” right away. They swiftly walk alongside an endless stream of people shuffling forward slowly in a single filed line. Some of them are curious and reach out their arms to touch the woman being chaperoned to the front of the line. Upon contact, their “ugliness” (i.e., personal, shameful life event) is revealed to Bethany. A person calls out to her by name. Bethany recognizes that it is the voice of her estranged father. Her hatred towards him is palpable. He steps off the line and touches her wrist transporting her mind back in time to when her “ugliness” started as a young child from his abuse. Throughout the novel, Bethany is transported back in time to those milestone moments in her life that shaped her own “ugliness”. Growing Only Dandelions highlights the presence of God through strategically placed relationships, purposely left “signs” and guardian angels, all of which are gifted to us through his grace.

When I was looking for some information on the author I could find anything about here.  I reached out to her through the Book Group and asked her a few questions, please see her responses to the questions I asked her.

Q: What inspired you to write “Growing Only Dandelions?”  My inspiration for writing Growing Only Dandelions is my strong spiritual and religious belief in life after death and a present and loving God.

Q: What do you enjoy most about writing?  The most enjoyable aspect of writing for me is finding the right words to properly convey the story unfolding in my mind.  I want the Reader to clearly envision the scenery and smell the aromas and taste the foods and feel the raw emotions described in my novel.  I want them to be completely submerged and present in my character’s lives so they can truly connect with the story.

Q: What advice would you give to those who want to become authors?  We are all given “Gifts”.  Many, many people are talented writers.  I believe that the only difference between a talented writer who wrote a successful book and a talented writer whose book did not succeed is Perseverance.  So, my advice would be, if you want to become a successful author, you must continually work hard at your craft because it is a “Gift” that you must nourish.  I am continuing to nourish my Gift.

My Thoughts:

This is the first time that I have read anything by this author; she did a great job of describing how  Bethany came to peace with her past and ends up making peace with a lot of her past.

The book is very captivating, there are emotional ups and downs and each chapter leaves you with questions.  This story will you  give you new insight into the power of love, and beauty, both inside & outside ourselves, & how other people, events, & a divine power can shape that beauty.  If you’re looking for a short spiritual read this is the one. I highly recommend it. I am giving it 5 stars.  I hope to read more from this author and I will be looking for more of her books.

My Thoughts:

I would like to thank the Fiction Care Review and the publishers for a ARC copy of this book for an honest review.

DEADLY GAMES is the first crime fiction/police procedural book in a new series featuring DCI Whitney and Forensic Psychologist, Dr. Georgina (George) Cavendish by author Sally Rigby.

Wow and what an awesome read.  This is first time of reading anything by this author and it won’t be the last.  Great plot, well written, excellent characters and a good twist at the end. Her psychological thrillers has me hooked from the start of the book until the end.

George and Whitney are well-written as the main characters and play off each other by being so different from each other.  The story moves quickly, with twists and turns and keeps you guessing.  I thought I knew who the killer was but nope I was wrong.  There is a second book to this called

I recommend this book to anyone who loves mysteries & thrillers. I will be reading more of this author‘s books in the future.
